O trecho do filme “Trading Places” (Trocando as Bolas) evidencia bem o assunto que trataremos aqui: Aprender Inglês muitas vezes exige simples aceitação.

No vídeo fica claro que apesar de “merry” e “happy” significarem “feliz”, diz-se “Happy New Year”, e não “Merry New Year”.

Eddie Murphy: “Merry New Year”

Passenger(passageiro): “Happy New Year. In this country we say Happy New Year”

Ufa!

‘John kicked the bucket last year’ significa ‘John morreu no ano passado’.

Uma expressão equivalente ao nosso ‘chutar o balde’ em Inglês, seria ‘to not think twice’, não pensar duas vezes. A tradução de ‘Ela chutou o balde, largou a família e foi para a Europa’ é: ‘She didn’t think twice, left her family and went to Europe’.

Pense nisso!

By the way (Por falar nisso)…

Rent- Alugar (You can rent a movie at the Movie Rental Shop. You can rent a flat to live in)

Cinema ticket, Admission- Ingresso

Seats- Assentos (There are many seats available here today.)

By the way (Por falar nisso)…

Vamos deixar claro o verbo ‘to tease’ usado como aborrecer. Crianças, muito frequentemente, ‘tease each other’ com aquelas brincadeiras de repetir tudo que a outra fala. Observe o diálogo:

John: “I went to the park with my parentes this afternoon”

Peter: “I went to the park with my parents this afternoon”

John: “Did you?”

Peter: “Did you?”

John: “Are you repeating everything I say?”

Peter: “Are you repeating everything I say?”

John: “Stop teasing me!!”

Peter: “Stop teasing me!!”
